For me, starting a business is deeply personal—it’s an idea turned into reality, a dream nurtured with hard work and sacrifice. But what happens when the passion fades, the opportunities shift, or life takes a new direction? As an entrepreneur, knowing when to sell, pivot, or exit is just as crucial as knowing how to grow. With that said, here are the biggest signs it might be time to make a move.

You No Longer Love the Day-to-Day
Running a business is challenging, but it should also be fulfilling. If you wake up dreading your work, or if the excitement you once had is gone, it might be time to rethink your role and/or your entire business. Sometimes, an adjustment in leadership or responsibilities can reignite your passion, but if that’s not the case, it may be time to step away.

A Great Opportunity Comes Knocking
Entrepreneurs are always thinking ahead, and sometimes, a new venture or investment can be more promising than staying where you are. If selling your business could open doors to a bigger and better opportunity, it’s worth considering. In my own journey, I chose to build a Harlem-based office because I saw a gap in the market—an opportunity that aligned with my long-term goals. Recognizing these moments is key.

The Business Becomes Unsustainable
Markets change, industries shift, and businesses evolve. If your business is struggling to keep up with demand, or if it’s becoming too difficult to maintain, you may need to reassess its future. This doesn’t always mean selling—it could mean restructuring, bringing in new leadership, or expanding into different markets.

Your Personal Life Takes Priority
Let’s be real—entrepreneurship is demanding. But your life outside of work matters too. If personal circumstances like family, health, or a change in priorities make running your business difficult, it’s okay to step back. Success isn’t just about financial wins—it’s about creating a life that aligns with what matters most to you.

We all know deciding to sell or exit a business is never easy. But the most successful entrepreneurs know that pivoting at the right time can lead to even bigger wins.

Whether it’s passion, opportunity, sustainability, or personal growth, recognizing the right moment to move on is a skill every business owner should develop.
