CRE Is a Different Kind of Career

October 08 2026

So commercial real estate has always attracted people who like variety, independence, and the idea of building something for themselves. It is not a traditional career path, and for me, that is part of what makes it interesting.

Over the years, I have worked on everything from retail and office leasing to multifamily, mixed-use properties, investment sales, and development opportunities.

No two transactions are exactly the same, and no two clients need exactly the same thing. You are constantly learning the market, understanding businesses, solving problems, negotiating, and figuring out how all the pieces come together.

That variety is one of the things I still enjoy about the business.

There is also real earning potential in commercial real estate, but I think it is important to be realistic about what creates that income.

You are building relationships, developing market knowledge, following opportunities, staying in touch with people, and continuing to work even when a transaction takes months or sometimes years to close.

The flexibility is real too. You may have more control over your schedule than you would in a traditional job, but that does not necessarily mean you work less. Your day might include property tours, meetings, calls, research, marketing, networking, and following up with clients. You have freedom, but you also have responsibility for creating your own opportunities.

Relationships are a major part of the business. Some of the people you meet today may not become clients for years. Others may introduce you to an owner, investor, tenant, or business opportunity you would never have reached on your own. That is why I have always looked at networking as relationship building rather than simply collecting contacts.

Commercial real estate also gives you an interesting view of how cities change. You see businesses open, neighborhoods evolve, properties repositioned, and investments take shape. You are often working somewhere between the owner, the business, the investor, and the community, which gives you a perspective most people never get to see.

It can be a rewarding career, but it is not one I would describe as easy or predictable.

You have to be comfortable learning, communicating, negotiating, and creating business for yourself. You also have to be patient enough to understand that success in this industry is usually built over time.

For the right person, that is exactly what makes commercial real estate worth considering.

If you are thinking about entering the industry and/or want to learn more about how commercial real estate actually works, take a look at the resources and training I have created to help you get started.
