Know Where You’re Going Before You Start

July 23 2026

One thing I always come back to with business owners is a simple question. What are you building toward? The answer usually shapes every decision that follows.

Are you building a business to sell one day? Are you creating something that will generate long term income? Is it something you’ll pass on to your family? Or are you building a business that gives you the freedom to live the life you want?

There isn’t a right answer. But there should be an answer.

I’ve found that when people don’t have a clear destination, they end up making decisions based on whatever feels urgent in the moment instead of what actually moves them closer to their long term goals.

I’ve been there myself.

Years ago, when I first started my business consulting company, I was focused on writing business plans. My goal was simple. Complete the project, get paid, and move on to the next client.

Over time, I realized that wasn’t where I created the most value. The real value wasn’t in producing a document.

It was helping business owners think through their strategy, challenge their assumptions, and build a roadmap for where they wanted to go. The business plan simply became the result of that process.

That realization changed the way I positioned my business and the type of work I wanted to do.

Looking back, it wasn’t really about changing my pricing. It was about understanding what I was actually offering. I’ve noticed the same thing with many entrepreneurs.

When you know your destination, it’s easier to decide what opportunities to pursue, what to say no to, and where your time is best spent. The day to day decisions become much clearer because they’re all moving in the same direction.

For me, that’s what strategy really is. Not just knowing what you’re doing today.

Knowing where you ultimately want today’s work to take you.

So.. what are you building toward?

Cyn
