Hardest Lesson I’ve Learned in Business

August 06 2026

One thing business has taught me is to trust my instincts. That lesson didn’t come overnight. It came from enough experiences where I ignored a red flag because I was focused on the opportunity instead.

I was talking about this recently on my VRG Daily series on Instagram.

In commercial real estate, it’s easy to get excited when a new opportunity comes along. You hear about a listing, a potential acquisition, or a large transaction, and naturally your mind starts thinking about everything that could come from it.

I’ve learned that’s exactly when I need to slow down.

Over the years, I’ve realized that the little things usually become the big things.

How someone treats the people around them. How they communicate. Whether they follow through on what they say. Whether they respect your time. Those details tell you a lot about what it’s going to be like working together.

If someone is creating unnecessary friction before we’ve even started, I’ve learned not to expect it to get easier later.

The same is true in any business.

Not every client is the right client. That doesn’t mean they’re a bad person. It simply means they may not be the right fit for the way you work or the type of business you’re trying to build.

One of the biggest shifts I’ve made over the years is becoming much more selective about who I work with.

Every relationship requires time and energy. If I’m going to invest both, I want to do it with people who value collaboration, communicate well, and respect the process.

I’ve found that the best business relationships usually feel that way from the beginning. There’s mutual respect. Clear communication. A shared goal. Those are the opportunities I’m most interested in.

Time is one of the few things we never get back. The longer I’ve been an entrepreneur, the more intentional I’ve become about where I spend it and who I spend it with.

For me, that’s been one of the most valuable lessons of all.

Do you think so too?

xoxo,

Cyn
