Where the Opportunities Are

September 07 2026

As we move into the last quarter of the year, I pay attention to where people are spending money, where businesses are opening, and which neighborhoods are seeing more activity.

New York City is heading into another busy holiday season, which creates opportunity for restaurants, retailers, event companies, catering businesses, wellness brands, and other service-based companies.

That does not always mean opening a new location. Sometimes the opportunity is a partnership, a temporary activation, corporate gifting, catering, or simply doing a better job of reaching the people already coming into your neighborhood.

I am also watching commercial real estate. Retail space in Manhattan has tightened, and businesses are still taking space.

For me, that is a reminder that operators are still making moves, but they need to be very clear about their numbers, their customer, and what they can realistically afford before signing a lease.

Government contracting is another area I think more businesses should look at. New York City purchases products and services from private companies across many industries. If you are a consultant, contractor, supplier, technology company, construction business, or professional service provider, it is worth understanding where your company may fit.

I am also paying attention to investment in local commercial corridors. When the City puts resources into neighborhood marketing, public spaces, events, and business districts, I want to know what is happening there and whether there are opportunities for local businesses to participate.

Then there are industries that continue to grow, particularly healthcare and professional services.

When I see growth in a sector, I think about everything around it. Growing companies need space, vendors, technology, staffing, marketing, contractors, consultants, and people who can solve problems.

Sometimes the opportunity is not starting something completely new, but recognizing where demand already exists and figuring out how your business can fit into it.

In this last quarter, I would focus less on chasing every opportunity and more on understanding where your business already has an advantage.

What business opportunities are you paying attention to before 2026 ends?
